Call of Duty: Modern Warfare review
The first ever Call of Duty (CoD) game was released in October 29, 2003. Most of the shooting games that were created during the early 2000s, including CoD, took place in WW2, as they were inspired by the very well received movie Saving Private Ryan. Call of Duty 4 was the first to break this trend in 2007. The game was set in the modern day, which was almost like a revolution among all the WW2 games. It inspired the birth of many games including Battlefield and was loved very much among fans. However, CoD started to branch out, perhaps a little too much. One of the more recent versions was called Infinity Warfare, and as the name suggests it takes place in outer space. Fans were not happy with this decision and many felt as though CoD was losing its identity, and had even left the franchise at this point. This year's CoD reboot has significant meaning in that the game is returning to where they came from, to what they were most loved for; modern warfare.
This game is a comeback. There is no room left for disappointment. Many fans, even the ones that had left, are looking forward to this year's edition, so to say the weight on the shoulders of the creators at Infinity Ward (IW) is heavy is an understatement; it must be crushing. One of the biggest challenges creators faced in the actual creation of the game, however, would have to be the story. They wanted to capture the authenticity of the modern battlefields. War now is grey, there is no distinct good or evil, and our soldiers are fighting in that area. IW wanted to portray this by showing war from different perspectives of the different parties involved. To do this they had to work with many consultants to really nail every little detail. They wanted players to feel what it is really like to be there as a soldier, but also as a civilian going through gunfire. The objective here is to illuminate what real war looks like by showing the different sides of warfare, often sides that we never get to see, but at the same time also make it an enjoyable experience. Here is a more detailed view on the making of the game.
The CoD: Modern Warefare open beta test was released for a short period of time on September 21. Many gamers got to experience the multiplayer version, and the feedback was mostly positive. In 13 years CoD finally upgraded their game engine and the visuals are absolutely stunning. Due to the overflow of battle royal games, these days many gamers sometimes feel like they want a game where they don't have to be tense all the time, where they can relax and just enjoy mindless shooting. CoD delivers in this area and provides a breath of fresh air by revisiting the basics. CoD has been acclaimed for its amazing storyline, so while we have to wait until this Friday(the 25th) for the real deal, it goes unsaid that the expectation for the story of this game is very high, and I have no doubts that it won't disappoint.
On the other hand, some players feel that the short TTK will make it harder for newbies to enter the game, and that it makes the game too difficult and less enjoyable. There are also opinions that the weapons balance doesn't match. In a game it is best if people can use various weapons and enjoy different gameplay styles, however when certain rifles are much better than others this is not possible. This reminds me of the problem with PUBG. The M416 rifle is incomparable to the other rifles, and people in Korea started calling the game M4grounds because everyone was using the same weapon and showing similar gameplay styles. The unbalance between weapons has been a problem in previous CoD series as well. This seems to be something that IW should continuously work on.
The expectations for CoD: Modern Warfare are exceptionally high this year, and it would be great to see IW deliver what the fans and gamers want. The game officially releases this Friday. I am sure that many people are excited for the launch and will be purchasing the game. I know I definitely will.
